Give Your Prayer Plant Better Light

Prayer plants grow best in medium to bright, indirect light. Keep them away from strong direct sunlight, as it can burn their leaves.

These plants can tolerate low light, but too little light may cause long, weak stems and fewer leaves. During winter, place your prayer plant in a brighter spot to help it stay healthy.

Prayer plants also prefer humid conditions. Keep the room temperature between 60°F and 80°F. If the air is dry, use a small humidifier near the plant or place its pot on a pebble tray filled with water. Make sure the bottom of the pot stays above the water.

Not getting enough natural light? A compact LED grow light can help your prayer plant maintain stronger, more compact growth.

Trim Long Stems to Improve the Shape

Prayer plants do not need regular pruning, but their long stems can make them look untidy as they grow. Trimming these stems helps the plant look fuller. You can also remove any stems that have grown too long and leaves that have turned yellow or brown.

Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to trim the stems just above a leaf node, where a leaf joins the stem. You can prune your prayer plant at any time of the year, but spring and summer are best because the plant grows more actively during these months.

Clean, sharp pruning scissors make it easier to trim leggy stems just above a node without damaging nearby growth. Shop pruning scissors from Amazon.

Check the Watering Routine

Keep the soil of your prayer plant evenly moist. Water it when the top layer of soil feels dry. You may need to water once or twice a week in spring and summer, and about once a week in fall and winter. Use filtered or distilled water if possible, as prayer plants can be sensitive to tap water.

Prayer plants do not tolerate dry soil for long, but too much water can cause root rot and fungal problems. Avoid keeping the soil soggy, and do not let water sit on the leaves for long periods.

Both overwatering and underwatering can cause brown, crispy leaf edges. If you notice brown leaves but have not changed your watering routine, check the plant for pests such as spider mites.

If the soil remains wet for many days, check the drainage holes and potting mix. A dense mix can hold too much water around the roots. A loose indoor potting mix with added perlite can improve drainage and airflow.

A narrow-spout watering can gives you better control when watering the soil without soaking the foliage.

Raise the Humidity if the Leaves Look Dry

reddit

Prayer plants come from tropical regions and generally do better with moderate to high humidity. Aim for around 50–60% humidity indoors. They can tolerate lower levels for a while, but dry air may cause brown leaf tips, curled edges, or leaves that struggle to unfurl.

A small humidifier near the plant is one of the more reliable ways to raise humidity. You can also group several houseplants together, although this will only make a modest difference. Keep the leaves from pressing against cold glass, especially during winter.

Avoid relying on frequent misting. The increase in humidity is brief, and wet leaves in a room with poor airflow can encourage leaf problems. If the plant has brown tips, check the humidity and watering routine before assuming that it needs more water.

Dry indoor air? Place a small humidifier near your prayer plant to maintain more consistent humidity.

Feed the Plant Carefully During Active Growth

Fertilizer can support new leaves, but it will not fix leggy growth caused by poor light. Improve the growing conditions first. Then feed the plant while it is actively producing new leaves.

Feed your prayer plant with a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply it every two weeks from early spring through fall, then reduce feeding to once a month during winter.

Too little fertilizer can slow your plant’s growth, while too much can damage its roots. Follow the recommended amount and avoid overfeeding.

Do not feed a plant that has waterlogged soil, damaged roots, or very little active growth. Fertilizer salts can build up in the pot and damage the roots. If you see a crust on the soil or leaf tips turning brown after feeding, pause fertilizing and flush the potting mix with plain water, allowing all excess water to drain away.

During autumn and winter, reduce feeding or stop if growth slows. You can resume when the plant begins producing new leaves again.

Here is a nutritious soil mix that can be useful for your Prayer plants.

Check Whether the Pot and Roots Are Healthy

A prayer plant does not need a large pot to grow well. In fact, moving it into a pot that is much too big can leave excess soil wet for too long. Choose a container with drainage holes that is only slightly larger than the root ball.

If the soil dries very slowly, smells sour, or the plant wilts even when the mix is wet, check the roots. Healthy roots are usually firm. Rotten roots tend to be dark, soft, and unpleasant-smelling. Remove any clearly rotten sections with clean scissors and repot the plant in fresh, well-draining mix.

Repotting is not necessary just because the stems look long. If the roots are healthy and the pot drains properly, leave them alone and focus on light, watering, and pruning.

Properly sized planters help prevent excess moisture retention while encouraging healthier root development.

Encourage New Growth Instead of Chasing Old Stems

After pruning, give the plant time to respond. Prayer plants do not always branch quickly, especially during the cooler months. Keep the light consistent and avoid moving the pot around every few days to test different spots.

Turn the pot a quarter-turn every week or two if the plant is leaning towards the window. This helps different sides receive light and can keep the plant from becoming lopsided. Do not expect this alone to correct severe legginess, though. The light level still needs to be suitable.

You may see new leaves emerge near the base or from nodes on existing stems. If the plant has healthy roots and enough light, this new growth should gradually improve its shape. Remove only stems that are dead, damaged, or clearly out of place.

Root Healthy Cuttings to Fill Out the Pot

reddit

If your prayer plant has several long, healthy stems, you can use some of them to grow new plants. This is a useful way to make the original pot look fuller without waiting for every stem to branch.

Take a cutting that includes a node, using clean scissors. Place the node in water or into a lightly moist propagation mix, keeping the leaves above the surface. If you use water, change it when it becomes cloudy and keep the cutting in bright, indirect light.

Once the cutting has developed a good set of roots, plant it into a small pot with suitable potting mix. You can add rooted cuttings to the original pot if there is enough room. Several plants growing together will give the container a fuller appearance more quickly than waiting for one plant to fill every gap.

Keep the new cuttings slightly moist while they establish, but do not leave them sitting in waterlogged soil. They need time to adjust after planting.

How Long Does It Take for a Prayer Plant to Look Fuller?

reddit

You may notice healthier leaves within a few weeks after improving the growing conditions, but filling out the plant takes longer. In spring and summer, you may see useful new growth within four to eight weeks. A plant recovering from poor light or root damage may take several months.

Judge progress by the new leaves rather than the old stems. The stretched sections will not shorten on their own. Pruning and new growth help improve the overall shape, while suitable light prevents the same problem from returning.

If the plant keeps producing long, widely spaced stems, check the light again before adding more fertilizer or water. Most leggy prayer plants need a change in their growing conditions, not extra feeding.
